WHAT HAPPENED

On 11 September, political affairs researcher Haitham al-Khazali, speaking on Al-Ahad TV (AAH — official), said the PMF needed armament, training, camps and infrastructure. Political analyst Muhammad Salah Turki, also speaking on the channel, called for new priorities and changes in PMF leadership, described the PMF as an ideological army that could not be changed and alleged that the United States sought to end it; the accompanying programme text linked Qais al-Khazali, AAH’s secretary-general, to ending political and electoral exploitation of the force.

WHY IT MATTERS

Compared with Turki’s institutional defence, Haitham al-Khazali’s formulation adds specific capability requirements: weapons, training facilities, camps and supporting infrastructure.
