On 8 September, Prime Minister’s security adviser Qasim al-Araji described resistance to the U.S. occupation as legitimate and said the factions that fought the occupation formed the nucleus of the PMF against Islamic State. He also said the remaining international coalition forces were scheduled to leave Iraq on 30 September 2026. Commander-in-chief’s spokesman Sabah al-Numan separately said that withdrawal would remove the justification for armed groups to retain weapons outside state institutions.
