WHAT HAPPENED

On 18 September, Qasim al-Araji, security adviser to Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, said the committee bringing weapons under state control had no fixed completion deadline and called reports of one incorrect. He added that once the committee completed its work and weapons were fully under state control, illegal arms holders would be treated under law as terrorists.

  1. Al-Diyar18 Sept, 20:53

If the committee’s work is completed and weapons are fully brought under state control, anyone carrying weapons illegally will be treated under the law as outside the law; they will be treated as terrorists.

  2. Al Jazeera Net18 Sept, 21:00

Recent reports that a deadline had been set for the weapons-control committee are completely incorrect; there is no specified period for bringing weapons under state control.

WHY IT MATTERS

Compared with reports of a fixed deadline, this formulation removes immediate time pressure but preserves the government’s stated coercive authority once the committee declares the process complete.
