Iraq closed the Sheeb border crossing with Iran at 6 a.m. Wednesday until further notice, stopping passengers, vehicles and commercial trucks. An Iraqi border official said the closure would allow a security review and installation of detection equipment to stop the smuggling of prohibited materials. A Maysan Provincial Council source gave a different explanation, saying Baghdad had ordered the closure for administrative reasons. AFP reported that Iraq was closing crossings under American pressure, with only two to remain open, citing a decision from Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s office. The report identified one northern crossing and Mehran, linking Wasit with Iran’s Ilam province, as the exceptions. Iran’s Interior Ministry said Baghdad had given no advance notice, contrary to an agreement it said required at least one day’s warning for closures lasting more than a day.
