WHAT HAPPENED

On 8 October, Sabereen News (KH — affiliated/aligned media) reported a Basra protest against the government’s dollar-rate increase, and Al-Ittijah TV (KH — official owned media) reported stagnation in Baghdad’s popular markets caused by exchange-rate instability. Al-Nujaba TV (Nujaba — official owned media) and Sabereen News carried Ishraqa Kanun’s rejection and prescriptions: control spending and unnecessary expenditure, prioritize necessary projects while protecting essential services and productive spending, increase non-oil revenue, combat corruption, reject patronage posts and administrative bloat, recover debts from foreign states and telecommunications companies, automate and control border crossings, collect their revenues, prevent smuggling and interference, and cancel customs exemptions granted to other countries; Sabereen’s longer version also sought parliamentary accountability and protection of private business from extortion and monopoly, and its graphic appears to bear an 8 October 2021 date. Economic expert Aqeel al-Muhammadawi, speaking on Al-Ahad TV (AAH — official owned media), said the government maintained that it would not reverse the increase.
