On 7 September, Al-Taif Bank depositor representative Zaid al-Badran told Al-Ahad TV (AAH — official) that ATMs stopped suddenly and branches closed; he said the bank had 200,000 customers and more than 20,000 depositors holding sums ranging from millions to billions. Economist Muhannad al-Amari told the same programme that the incident had shaken confidence in Iraq’s banking sector and would have significant repercussions. Neither speaker identified the cause of the disruption or quantified the bank’s total liabilities.
