IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva pledged on Saturday to provide Iraq with money and policy support. Baghdad had approached the Fund for a potential programme, and the IMF plans to accelerate discussions. The talks come against the Fund’s forecast that Iraq’s economy will contract by 16% in 2026 before growing by 19% in 2027. At the annual meetings in Thailand, Finance Minister Faleh al-Sari expressed confidence that Iraq could complete its financial reforms within the next two years.
Separately, International Development Bank for Investment and Finance on Friday rejected US Treasury allegations that it had helped Iran access US dollars, following Washington’s sanctions against it on Thursday. The bank offered cooperation with the Central Bank of Iraq and US Treasury through official and legal channels to clarify the facts and protect stakeholders’ rights. The Kurdistan Region’s MyAccount programme said that salary payments were unaffected by the sanctions, through a programme implemented under Central Bank supervision.
