Parliament approved 11 ministers and three deputy prime ministers on Thursday, including Laith al-Khazali (AAH — senior leader), who is under U.S. terrorism sanctions. The appointments included Nayef al-Shammari as defence minister and Yasir al-Maliki as interior minister. Diplomatic sources told AFP that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi had obtained Washington’s tacit approval for al-Khazali’s appointment. They said approval followed his promise to advance disarmament and guarantees that the factions would not attack American interests in Iraq. The U.S. Treasury separately announced sanctions against Iraq-based International Development Bank for Investment and Finance on Thursday. The U.S. Treasury alleged ties between the bank, Iranian government entities and armed groups allied with Tehran. Najaf Friday-prayer leader Sadr al-Din al-Qubbanji, a senior Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq leader, said Friday that expanding government posts had “no real justification” during a financial crisis. He cited the religious authority’s repeated calls to prevent waste of public funds.
