Ansar Allah al-Awfiya turns the strikes into a four-point demand list

Ansar Allah al-Awfiya issues a formal statement demanding an end to all foreign military presence, an accelerated national air-defence system, passage of the PMF law, and a review of relations with Saudi Arabia

WHAT HAPPENED

FAA (Ansar Allah al-Awfiya — official social media channel) published a signed and dated statement on 29 July saying that repeated violations of Iraqi sovereignty and airspace and the targeting of its leaderships and national institutions constitute "a very grave escalation" that cannot be treated as passing events, and that "the policy of silence or contenting oneself with positions of condemnation is no longer sufficient to deter the aggressors". It calls for ending "any foreign military presence", for hastening completion of "an advanced national air-defence system", for hastening "the legislation of the Popular Mobilization Forces law, which is a natural entitlement of this sacred institution on a par with its peers among the security institutions", for professional and transparent investigations into all security breaches, and states that "reviewing relations with the Saudi regime has become a national necessity" given what it calls the bloody period of terrorism and takfiri thought Iraqis paid for.

WHY IT MATTERS

Attaching the PMF law and an air-defence programme to a sovereignty grievance moves the argument into parliament and the budget, where the same factions already contest appointments and money.
