WHAT HAPPENED

On 19 October, Badr parliamentary bloc MP Qusay Abbas al-Shabaki told Al-Ahad TV (AAH — official owned media) that election-law amendments disadvantaged minorities, saying Suwayana won three of the five Christian-quota seats with Kurdistan Democratic Party support and alleging that Peshmerga personnel voted for it under party direction. Kurdistan Democratic Party MP Shirwan al-Dobardani acknowledged supporting Suwayana in return for Shia forces’ support for al-Kildani, and said his party rejected two Migration Ministry nominees submitted by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi because they were affiliated with Babyloun. He also described Babyloun’s rhetoric as provocative and said his party would vote for an independent Christian migration minister.

“The latest amendment to the election law contains great injustice toward minorities... Christians have five quota seats... Suwayana obtained three seats with support from the Democratic Party... The Peshmerga voted for Suwayana under direction from the Democratic Party... The election-law amendment is the cause of the problems with the Christian quota.”
