On 19 October, the Iraqi government directed pursuit under the Anti-Terrorism Law of those inciting or obstructing state weapons control, according to شفق نيوز, which quoted the prime minister’s media office prohibiting use of media freedoms to promote violence, internal fighting, weapons outside state authority or outlawed groups. Sabereen News (KH — affiliated/aligned media) characterized the announcement as a threat against media institutions and contrasted it with government interviews on Gulf channels it accused of openly displaying hostility toward Iraq while operating freely in Baghdad.

“The Iraqi government threatened in an official statement to hold accountable media institutions promoting what it described as ‘weapons outside the framework of the state.’ This threat comes while the government continues holding meetings and interviews through Gulf channels that openly display hostility toward Iraq’s people, system and government, although those channels’ offices operate normally”
